When Giants Ruled: The Story of Park Row, New York's Great Newspaper Street (Communications and Media Studies, No. 2)
Published in Hardcover by Fordham University Press (July, 1999)
Author: Hy B. Turner
Average review score:

AN INFORMATIVE AND THRILLING READ
"When Giants Ruled" quickly involves the reader in the drama of print journalism's most robust era of cutthroat competition. Hy Turner demonstrates a strong talent for condensing the story of newspapers to its essence. He never overburdens you with details, though occasionally I found myself wishing for more. Meanwhile, the reader is often rewarded with new and colorful anecdotes to familiar events in our nation's history. Turner's superb writing skills keep the reader delightfully moving from one page to the next, while sometimes pausing to more fully enjoy the unfolding drama. It is a book that could only have been written by someone to whom journalism was obviously a first love.

The definitive book about the men who invented journalism.
HyTurner has given us an amazingly exciting history of the rough and tumble world of New York City newspapers, how they got started and who started them. He recounts scoops, scandals, dirty tricks, sensational reporting of sensational stories, and the lives and careers of colorful men and women who invented all of the techniques for digging up the who, what, where, when, why and how of events from murders to wars. What might have been dry and dreary reading that only a journalism pofessor could care about has been presented as a compelling saga that reads like a novel. If you enjoyed the Orson Welles classic film "Citizen Kane" and W.A.Swanberg's "Citizen Hearst" you will love Hy Turner's beautifully written and scrupulously researched story of the titans of print who once rubbed elbows, and often jammed them in the ribs of their competitors in a short block of downtown-New York's newspaper row.And if you wonder how the Sunday comic strips got their start, Hy Turner has the answer. This book also relates how a shrewd newspaper mogul collected pennies to build the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty, and sold a lot of newspapers. Everyone who reads a newspaper is in debt to the giants of Park Row, and anyone who cares about journalism should read this terrific book.

You wont forget it!
Bought this for my niece, she loves it. Beautiful photography.

Fantastic
The photography is amazing and that alone is worth getting this book. However the stories behind each picture and story of each member of the Orphan 8 are extremely touching, and provide a wonderful insight between humans and elephants. It will leave you in awe of the difference the wonderful people at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust make in this endeavor to help save the African Elephant.

Wild Virginia: A Guide to Thirty Roadless Recreation Areas Including Shenandoah National Park
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (01 June, 2002)
Authors: Steven Carroll and Mark Miller
Average review score:

The essential hiking companion!
Wild Virginia is the ultimate hiking guide to one of the most beautiful states in the eastern US. Whether you're looking for day hikes or extended trips, this is the guide for you. This book not only offers an informative overview of hiking in the wilderness areas but also provides a description of each trail in great detail. If the authors state that the trail curves sharply to the left or there is a fork in the trail, you know it's there. The maps are also true representations, making this guide essential while planning at home or hiking on the trail. I can't wait to see their West VA guide!

This book rocks!
Wild Virginia is a unique work that clearly presents information about wilderness areas in the state. I have been unable to find a good source to have on hand when planning trips, and now that I have discovered this book, I am excited to take it along. It is obvious that the authors have been thorough in their research, and have taken great pains to hike and explore every trail they discuss. Their presentation of each area will make it easy for any newcomer to enjoy the wilderness of Virginia.

The Witch Doctor of Wall Street: A Noted Financial Expert Guides You Through Today's Voodoo Economics
Published in Hardcover by Prometheus Books (May, 1996)
Author: Robert H. Parks
Average review score:

Excellent book to clarify fundamental financial concepts
As a former student of Dr. Parks, I say this book has demystified more basic financial and economic theories than anything I've read before. Master this book and you'll never be intimidated by Wall Street Journal's C section ever again.

Excellent book. Some economics may help the reader.
This is a very informative book on the workings of the U.S. economy. The first time I read it, there were some topics that were difficult to grasp. After taking some Jr. college-level economics and finance classes, the book made much more sense. Also, I found it helped me better understand today's economic news. For example, are deficits always inflationary? In addition, Dr. Parks exposes the all-to-prevalent lack of economic theory displayed by our politicians and economic advisors.

XML Topic Maps: Creating and Using Topic Maps for the Web
Published in Paperback by Addison Wesley (16 July, 2002)
Authors: Jack Park, Sam Hunting, and Douglas C. Engelbart
Average review score:

XML Topic Maps - the next level above XML?
Since Tim Berners-Lee wrote of the Semantic Web
several years ago, there has been speculation about
how we might embed meaning within Web pages, as
opposed to merely displaying content. To answer this,
XML offers the separation of content from display.
From its user definable tags, different user
communities can define their own sets of tags and
associate meaning with those. XML offers the
infrastructure. But it is still fairly low level.
Assembler language, as it were, compared to more
powerful languages like C or Java.

So if XML is like an assembler, what is the analog of
C? This book puts forward XTM, XML Topic Maps, as the
answer. It consists of 17 chapters by different
authors, outlining various aspects of XTM. The
chapters can be divided into two types.

One type has nitty gritty explanations, replete with
examples of XTM written in XML. If you are a
programmer, these chapters are for you. There are web
sites listed with XTM definitions that you can

incorporate into your XTM, just like using standard
namespaces available on the web in normal XML.

The other chapters deal with the much deeper and
harder problem of how XTM may be used for Knowledge
Organisation and Knowledge Representation. They are
high level and abstruse, edging up to the issues of
semiotics and artificial intelligence.

As a side note: In the XTM examples and
implementations given, I was surprised to see no
mention of altavista's graphical representation of

search results, circa 1998. This was not in XTM, but
it conveyed the flavour. What happened was that if you
searched for, say, 'tornado', the results would appear
as a graph. The nodes would be the main keywords in
the documents containing 'tornado'. Nodes would be
connected to each other if documents contained both
those words. In this case, one might see two non
intersecting clusters - one related to weather
patterns, and the other to jet planes. By clicking on
a node, you could expand it into finer grained graphs.
It complements this book, whose main thrust is in
manually describing XML documents in an XTM format,
because it could achieve much the same visual results,
but derived automatically from arbitrary web pages.

Interesting approach to knowledge management
In order to fully appreciate this book you will need a good working knowledge of XML and associated W3G documents, and more than a casual exposure to knowledge management. The first four chapters are a blend of historical information about XTM (XML topic maps) and fundamental technical information that describes design rationale and components of XTM (which is a separate open source initiative that is based on the ISO/IEC 13250 Topic Maps standard).

Chapters 5, 6 and 7 dive into the mechanics of XTM and knowledge management, and requires the prerequisite knowledge I cited above. This part of the book is not an easy read. This is not a reflection of the authors/editors ability to write as much as it is of the nature of the material. Knowledge management and development issues are given both wide and deep treatment in these chapters. Chapters 8 and 9 go deeper into the XML family as they relate to XTM (with an emphasis on XSLT), and address creating and maintaining sites that use XTM/XSLT as the core of a knowledge management strategy.

Related topics are covered in Chapters 10 through 13, including open source tools, RDF (widely used as a mechanism for weblogs and blogs that are gaining popularity), and semantic networks (intelligent agent-based systems). The final two chapters tie together the preceding material with a chapter devoted to topic map fundamentals for knowledge representation and a chapter about topic maps in knowledge organizations.

If you are interested in using an XML-like technology as the foundation of a knowledge management strategy, or are interested in learning about new directions in the integration of web technologies and knowledge management this book is ideal. For the technical reader the code examples, pointers to open source and commercial solutions and the website that supports this book (using topic maps, of course), this book is an excellent way to leverage knowledge of XML and use it to develop knowledge management solutions.

The only CG book. If a park is not listed, chances are it did not meet Woodall's minimun requirements (in other words, stay away from the unlisted parks).

2000 Trailer Life Directory: Campgrounds, Rv Parks, and Services (Trailer Life Directory, 2000)
Published in Paperback by Trailer Life Books (January, 1900)
Authors: TL Enterprises Inc and Inc., TL Enterprises

Great Campground Guide for Trailers
This is a wonderful resource for anyone who travels with a camper or RV. The guide gives the traveler an excellent idea of what to expect at each campground listed (all of North America). Listings are by state and are cross referenced by campground name. Campgrounds are rated for completeness of facilities, cleanliness/construction of restrooms and showers, and visual/environmental appeal. I think the most helpful aspect of the guide is the restroom cleanliness star rating system. Trailer Life 2000 has made my family vacation planning so much easier.
